Eastern State Penitentiary : This amazing old prison is a combination museum/ruin located in Philadelphia. Parts of the prison go back as far as the 1820's. It has been closed since 1971.

East Village :

Governor's Island : These photos are not the best. I got to GI late on a cloudy and VERY windy afternoon. So windy, in fact, that they closed the island and sent everyone back to Manhattan an hour early.

The highlight of my visit was finding the hospital building unlocked.When the Coast Guard moved out, they left nothing behind except some loose wires, a key box, and a very cool exit sign (40's, maybe??). I would have like to explore the other floors in hopes of finding an operating room or something really intriguing, but if I did, I might have had to sleep there due to the early closing.

McHale's : This fantastic bar/grill was a long time fixture on West 46th St, and a perfectly preserved relic of the Times Square of the 40's and 50's. It closed in January of 2006 because the building had to come down to be replaced with new condos. When I took these photos (and ate there, of course) shortly before they closed, they assured me they planned to re-open with decor and neon intact. Since then, however, some of the neon signs have turned up for sale at antique dealers, so I'm not optimistic about a re-opening. Thanks for the memories.

End of a Factory : Hoboken - like many neighborhoods in New York -is rapidly loosing its industrial urban feel to high priced residential developments. One afternoon I discovered this half-demoloshed factory on the north end of town. I don't know why they left a corner of the building standing, but I couldn't pass on this kodak moment.

The Gates : In February 2005, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude assembled their massive modern art project, now known as The Gates. The project consisted of 7,500 saffron colored gates with matching fabric panels hanging over miles of Central Parks walkways. 'The Gates' provided a colorful contrast to the gray landscape of Central Park in winter. While 'The Gates' lasted only two weeks, the crowds it brought helped many NYC businesses. These photos were taken on two different dates, the later ones taken shortly after a snowstorm.

Maxwell House Factory : These are some pictures of the abandoned Maxwell House factory that stood on the waterfront in Hoboken, NJ. These photos were taken in November 2003, shortly before the factory was torn down.

Archives : I take a lot of pictures - its my style. I shot a lot and then edit a lot and hopefully end up with a few decent photos in the end. I moved some photos into this archive which I still like, but I didn't feel that they were captivating enough to keep in the main gallery. If anyone feels strongly that I should move any of these back to the main gallery, please leave a comment on that photo and I'll receive an email.

Bay Ridge : After a long 2 month wait, Forgotten-Ny.com had another walking tour, this time in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Howard Johnson's : After a long, cold day on skis, I asked the receptionist at my hotel if there were any good diners in Lake Placid. 'Well, there's Howard Johnsons and..' she replied, which was all I needed to hear. I didn't think there were any of these left. As it turns out, this is one of three still in operation. The organge roof and steeple are gone, but the interior and the food did not dissapoint. It was nice to experience 'the flavor of America' again. They still leave the whole pot of coffee at the table for you. Now that's real class.

This HoJo's will be celebrating it's 50th birthday this May (check out http://www.lakeplacidhojos.com/). For anyone in the greater NYC area, it's only a six hour drive.
